What we are learning:
Reading and Spelling-We are reading the fourth story in our reading books the week of September 5th. It is called Dogs, and is nonfiction. Our spelling list is tied to the story, and will be long e words spelled with ee or ea. The list is on this site for your convenience. I will send the books home with the kids on Wednesdays to read the story of the week with an adult. This will be homework most Wednesdays throughout the year. Remember to send the book back each Thursday! Thursdays we will have a phonics quiz for the kids to show their mastery of the sound(s) of the week, and on Fridays they will have a comprehension and vocab quiz from the story as well as a spelling test.
Math- We're finishing up our first second grade unit. You'll find the parent letter on this site so you'll know exactly what we are learning. We'll test the week of September 12th. Throughout the year we will be practicing our facts as it is a second grade standard that the kids can fluently add and subtract within 20. Our fact fluency (mad minute) will be a math grade beginning second semester. So practice those math facts! Use the xtramath.org site!! It is set up for the kids and a letter came home so you can get signed in. Their PIN number is taped to the inside of their agendas.
Science/Social Studies- We're finishing our science unit on Matter. The test will be Friday, September 9th. I plan to send a study guide home with the kids on Tuesday, but right now our copier is not working. :( If it continues to not work on Tuesday, I'll email a study guide to you.
English/Writing-We'll begin writing with a personal narrative. The kids will select a topic, and we will work through the stages of the writing process to tell something important about ourselves. We'll work on adding transition words to help keep our stories in order, and putting in feelings, thoughts, and actions. Brainstorming some important events in your child's life this weekend may give them a good start!
